Sally Mann, born 1951 in Lexington Virginia as Sally Turner Munger. Her parents were Robert and Betty Munger. Her Mother earned a degree in Pre-Med and moved with Robert to Lexington where she got a job as a manager at a local bookstore and remained until retirement. She founded the local Women's League of Voters. Her Father was a General Practitioner and renown horticulturalist. Both parents were well-educated, and well loved in the community. From what her children believe is her parents were busy and not especially affectionate though very loving to each of their three children. Her Father was very supportive of her photography and handed down his camera to pursue it. She has a collection of poetry to accompany some of her photos. Following her parent's footsteps she was also college educated. Sally received a BA from Hollins College in 1974, and an MA in writing from the same school in 1975. She was a writing major but found she wasn't very good (per her opinion). Always striving to be the best at everything some might say she's an over-achiever but her hard work has certainly paid off as her work is appreciated world wide and she is a huge influence for many photographers today. Her poetry was published in a rare first and only printing. It is a Platinum Limited Edition with a signed free standing platinum print, handbound in papercovered boards, monogramed and printed in letterpress on handmade cotton rag paper. It is extremely rare and has been proudly displayed in museums. It is a collaborative effort. Hand coated platinum prints by Stan Klimek. Paper by Twinrocker. Hand binding by Sarah Creighton. Letterpress printing by Michael Russem." 21st received the 3rd Annual Lucie Award for Photographic Book Publisher of the Year for this publication.
